The Basics

The world of music production is endless. Modern music production is a creative, complex, technical, and very unique art form and skill. Before we dive deep, lets go over some of the fundamental aspects of digital music production.

Digital Audio Workstation

A Digital Audio Workstation, or a DAW, is a computer application software used for manipulating, recording, and producing audio files. DAW’s are very common these days because they are used in all professional and amateur music releases. Even when a song is being recorded with only acoustic instruments, a DAW is used to process the sound. DAW’s come in various formats. These days, laptops are transforming the world of music production. Laptops with single software programs are now the norm for producing. This is due to the enormous number of people who produce at an amateur level. However, many professional music producers use their laptop primarily, even choosing to use them in a large professional recording studio.

There are many DAW’s to choose from and they are all very unique. Despite how different each DAW is, they all have the same basic functions. Some of the most popular DAW’s today are FL Studio, Ableton, Reason, and Logic X. While these applications are popular for creating music, Pro Tools is the industry standard for recording instruments or vocals and mixing and mastering tracks.

Hardware vs Software

Although there are hundreds of sound effects to use today, there are a few core effects that come in both hardware and software. A music producer can stay on the laptop or computer and need no other resources. When using computer software, all the effects, features, and tools are within the computer. Hardware on the other hand, refers to the use of physical equipment. There are many sound effects that come in a physical form, which is what the norm was in the old days. There is an ongoing debate in the music producer community about whether hardware or software is the best choice. However, it largely comes down to what level of a producer you are. Amateurs typically have less equipment, while professionals have endless resources and will use both hardware and software.
